Speaker Grille and Mesh Validation: Buzz, Airflow, Corrosion, and Cosmetic Limits

Define the Grille Stack-Up

Create a section drawing and BOM from outside surface to driver. Identify substrate, thickness, open area, perforation geometry, mesh type, coating, primer, adhesive or weld, frame, foam, fasteners, clips, logo, driver or passive-radiator clearance, drainage, and service method.

Measure Acoustic Effect in the Final Product

Compare the same production-intent unit with the approved grille configuration and, where engineering permits, a controlled reference condition. Use repeatable geometry, level, firmware, power state, and mounting. Review frequency response, output, compression, port or radiator behavior, and listening notes.

Do not approve a grille solely because the broad response curve looks similar. Narrow resonances, high-frequency loss, turbulence, and vibration may appear at certain angles or higher levels.

Test the Final Assembly for Buzz and Contact

Use controlled sweeps, tones, speech, and music at increasing safe levels. Listen at grille edges, clips, screws, badge, mesh, decorative rings, driver surrounds, passive radiator, and ports. Repeat in normal orientations and after transport, vibration, drop, or removal/reinstallation where relevant.

Validate Coating and Corrosion Against Use

Define whether the product is indoor, humid, outdoor, coastal, splash-exposed, or subject to hand salts and cleaning. Choose substrate, pretreatment, coating, edge protection, and test program accordingly. Laboratory corrosion exposure is comparative evidence only when specimen preparation, scratches, duration, inspection, and acceptance are defined.

When the product is intended for outdoor or coastal use, define the exact exposure before testing; if it is indoor only, a different program may be justified.

ASTM B117 describes operation of salt-spray apparatus but does not by itself choose a product exposure duration or pass criterion. Engineering and the buyer should approve a use-relevant program, and qualified compliance review is required for any public claim.

Check Cleaning, Handling, and Cosmetic Limits

Use approved cleaning agents and methods from the manual. Inspect color, gloss, staining, rust, white corrosion, coating lift, mesh sag, adhesive bleed, scratches, dents, sharp edges, and logo position. Define viewing distance, lighting, zones, and signed limit samples.

Control Assembly and Repeat Orders

Record incoming flatness, coating lot, mesh lot, adhesive shelf life, fixture, clip force or fastener torque, cure, alignment, clearance check, and final buzz test. Compare several units across cavities, operators, and lots. A hand-adjusted sample is not a stable production process.

  • Substrate, perforation, mesh, coating, frame, attachment, badge, clearance, drainage, and service method are defined.
  • Acoustic comparison uses the final assembly, controlled geometry, several levels, and listening evidence.
  • Sweeps and program material localize edge, mesh, badge, clip, driver, radiator, and port artifacts.
  • Corrosion and cleaning programs match intended exposure and state their specimen and acceptance conditions.
  • Cosmetic zones and signed limits control color, gloss, stain, rust, lift, sag, scratch, dent, edge, and logo position.
  • Incoming, assembly, cure, torque or clip, alignment, clearance, and final buzz controls are documented.
  • Several production-intent units cover supplier, cavity, process, and lot variation.
  • Material, coating, mesh, logo, adhesive, tooling, or process changes trigger acoustic and durability retest.
